Chairman Fred revisited - Sept. 2019

In December of 2016, I was knee deep into researching Fred Hampton for a history curriculum I was creating for middle grades. I created my first illustration of Fred to help me preserve my love and respect for the Midwest legend. I revisited Fred’s history and my illustration on the 50th anniversary of his death. As a socialist of color and admirer of Fred’s work, I was excited to continue to preserve his story through an updated illustration. As a community educator, I thought it was important to use myself as an example of an important lesson I always share with students when they fear not being “good” artists - we all grew our skills over time.
